"RapidPrototyping" is a process which produces a physical, three dimensional object from a 3D CAD file. A Stereolithography machine uses a computer controlled laser to cure a photosensitive resin, layer by layer, to create the 3D part.

The technology is capable of producing complex freeform solid objects directly from a computer model without part-specific tooling and traditional machine. It is well suited for producing objects at low production volumes and low costs. SLA has the capacity to dramatically shorten the product development cycle times. Design quality can be improved because the physical model formed by SLA is easier to use for visual inspection, fit and assembly tests, functional process, ergonomic evaluation, etc. The designer can increase part complexity with little effect on lead-time and cost. Rapid Prototyping (RP) is a state-of-the-art technology, which emerged only 10 years ago. In the past, Prototyping was a process requiring the use of several machining equipment, tools and dies/molds. This took a long time, often several weeks or even months to complete, and at a high cost.

Today, with continual breakthroughs in science and technology, and rife competition among companies to launch new products, the product life span gets shorter. So, designers are asked not only to design new products quickly but also to fabricate the prototype as soon as possible. Rapid Prototyping technology can save 50-70% operation time and 65-80% cost than traditional machining.

The Stereolithography process requires a SolidModel file of the part be created. The common format for this is .STL and is exported from most 3D design software packages.
